The Police Are My Friends [October 2002]

Sunday's Amon Tobin show was really intense. The Pyramid was completely packed and Tobin spun a sampling of everything from breaks, to industrial drum and bass, to random chaotic IDM noise. The projections were a nice touch and almost made up for Tobin's lack of stage presence. I guess he was too busy playing with final scratch.

The Hip Hop Wieners tour touched down in Winnipeg last night at the U of W Bullman Centre. The show was short and sweet. All ages shows always seem to have a strange dynamic to them. The younger kids never really seem to let loose and have a good time... they tend to stand in front of the stage and blankly stare up at the performers. Actually, that happens quite often at +18 shows... blah.

The show last night ended up costing me close to 100 dollars. That includes one friendly tow truck ride for my car and a bonus parking ticket.

Hop Along [October 2002]

Have you checked out the flash intro to Naomi Klein's No Logo in the projects section? It was made by a guy named Jason Diceman. His page contains some interesting ideas and projects. I found www.communicationism.org particularly interesting.

Woody Harrelson wrote a very interesting article on the Iraq situation for the Guardian. Before you write it off as the self-indulgent ramblings of a Hollywood stoner... please give it a read.

J-23 from hiphopdx.com lists his top 30 underground hip-hop album picks. My personal list would be quite different... but I guess it just comes down to musical taste.

I ordered a router... Bunny Cam will arrive soon!

Forget Me Nots [October 2002]

I just cleaned our my wallet. I found 18 concert stubs in there.... no wonder it was getting so fat. Looking at old concert stubs is a wonderful walk down a musical memory lane. However, I am stumped by one of the stubs. I cannot, for the life of me, remember seeing the Weakerthans @ Le Rendez-Vous on May 3rd, 2001. The opening act was Lower Than The Low and the show was presented by WECC. This is really starting to bother me. Arg.

The 18th of October is Media Democracy day. "Media Democracy prioritizes diversity over monotony, citizen control over corporate choice, cultural development over company profit, and public discourse over public relations."

In the same vein: Project Censored... A look at undercovered news.

The history of breakdancing. (AKA: B-Boying or B-Girling. The media made up the term breakdancing.)

Weakened By The Weekend [October 2002]

The (not) long (enough) weekend was nice. Good times were had with friends and family. Tonight we are heading to the WAG to see our friend Mimi play drums for Mike Petkau. DJ CO-OP will be spinning there too.

Tomorrow is the De La Soul show @ the Empire. It's going to be hella wicked!

The new Jurassic 5 album, Power in numbers is hot.

Does anyone know where I can pick up a fully functioning Nintendo Power Glove? I guess I'll have to start hunting in pawn shops around town... or buy one off ebay as a last resort.

Hermits [October 2002]

Shaw finally noticed that we were stealing our cable. They put some filters in place and now we only have Much More Music and CNN. With commercial radio already removed from our daily routine, will the absence of TV create a greater distance between us and the rest of the pop culture world?

Taalam Acey has an interesting video on GNN dealing with the current state of hip pop.

Check out the vs. spy blog. He's planning a one year/$6000 world adventure.

My girlfriend is addicted to NeoPets.

Do You Realize? [October 2002]

The New Deal was amazing last night. If you ever get a chance to see them live... you must go! Amazing live breakbeats and beatboxing from the drummer. The keyboardist had a mini moog and 3 other keyboards and some effect racks. The bass player was nice and funky but his volume could have been turned up a notch, (and maybe the keyboards down a notch). I would have liked to have heard some vocals in the mix, but I can't really complain.

The Open Mic Jam @ the Collective was canceled.

Looks like Winnipeg is getting some bad press over in the UK. (In other news, the free press staff are on strike.)

Check out the newish Flaming Lips album online. I really enjoyed track #9, Do you realize.

Ever wonder where the Beastie Boys and the Dust Brothers got all those dope samples for Paul's Boutique?

Try this at home. Ha!

Working Title [October 2002]

If you are interested in music production, Precursor is holding a free seminar on Native Instruments' new software sampler Kontact. The seminar will be held at the following times:

- Tonight (Oct 9th) @ Long & McQuade, 651 Stafford Street 7-9pm.
- Tomorrow (Oct 10th) @ Precursor Productions, 218 Marion Street.

Also tonight:

-In conjunction with the Winnipeg Improv Festival: The ill Open Mic Jam @ the Collective with John Smith and Ismalia from Frek Sho hosting. The last ill Open Mic Jam was a huge inspiration. Lots of great local hip-hop.
-The New Deal @ the West End. Live house and breakbeat! (Check the music downloads on their site.)

In other news...

-The glossy flyers for the Halloween show can now be found @ the usual haunts around town.
-I won tickets to that De La Soul show I was bitching about earlier. Now I just have to pretend I'm a smoker when I go pick up the tickets. Cough cough

Who's Left? Who's Leaving? [October 2002]

The essence of Winnipeg captured by a music lover from New York:

City Still Breathing
Listening to the Weakerthans

by Paul Tough

The Hip-hop Wieners CD is now available on the Peanuts and Corn webpage. I've heard good things about this collaboration between John Smith, Pip Skid and mcenroe.

If you want to know what's going on the in the world of DJ CO-OP just check his page.

Soul Doubt [October 2002]

So that De La Soul concert I was excited about... a clever cigarette marketing trick!

Check this info from the promoters of the De La tour:

"Tickets for Icebox are not for sale. In fact, the only way to get tickets is by entering your name in the contest by registering through this Website or by calling 1-866-255-0455.

Please note that the ticket contest is open only to smokers aged 19 years and older."

Sorry for the lack of posts of late... I've been hella sick for the past 3 or 4 days.

A movie everyone should watch: Wonder Boys.
